In 2022 I was suffering from extreme pain in my left knee. If I walked for more than 20 minutes my knee would seize up and I had better hope I was close to home otherwise I would have to hop home.

I was also suffering from a compressed disk in my spine. Following several medical consultations I was despatched to my physio. I underwent six weeks of treatment and had to do daily exercises.

One day my physio said, ‘I know this excellent strength trainer. I think you’d benefit from working with her. I warn you though, she works you hard.’ I agreed for her to put me in touch with Ruth.

Ruth was most apologetic but she had no spaces, but if one became available she’d be in touch. Feeling somewhat relieved, I forgot all about it.

In early January 2023, I received a message from Ruth to say a spot had opened up if I wanted it. As it was the start of a new year I reluctantly felt I should take it. I accepted and attended my first strength training session the following Monday.

Lifting weights was a completely new experience for me. For two days after the first session, I could barely walk. She had been a little overzealous. Every muscle in my body ached.
