The Sentence I Live My Life By

My Aunt said this sentence in passing one day, but I have never forgotten it.

It’s funny how a few words can lodge in your brain for some unfathomable reason and reappear like a genie out of a bottle. Over twenty years ago, I was at my aunt’s house for Sunday lunch with my mum.

My mum was complaining about something incredibly inconsequential, I think it was about how her new skirt didn’t fit her properly and it was annoying her. My aunt laughed and said

‘Well, we can get it altered.’ Then she paused and said these words:

‘You know Shirley, if you look hard enough you can usually find a solution to most problems.’

At the time I just smiled and promptly forgot all about it. Then an odd thing happened a few years ago. The memory of that moment came back to me.

I smiled again and wondered why I had even remembered it. But it wouldn't go away. The sentence kept popping into my head.

If you look hard enough you can usually find a solution to most problems.

It struck me that this was something I was pretty good at and I vowed to live my life by continuing to do that and more.
